Hi Reader,
Now that we’ve got two football teams traveling to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl, …
Do not use the words “Super Bowl.”
Ever since I started work in social media (2008), I’ve had to look this stuff up or ask my colleagues if they looked it up already. You are not allowed to use “Super Bowl” – it is trademarked by the NFL. You can use it in a conversation, but social media? No, it’s marketing and only the NFL has the rights for that.
Thank you, Karen, for referencing this for us!
Here are some of alternative phrases:
- Guy-lentine’s Day
- “Best time to go to Costco/the mall” (after the first quarter)
- Manicure Time!
- Sportsball Championship
- Opener for Usher
- Pre-show for Usher’s mini concert
- Taylor Swift’s boyfriend’s game day
- Sunday
- The day after Lunar New Year
- Sunday in Las Vegas
- Shiny Pants Championship Game
- Red Team vs Red Team Day
You can still use “the big game” in marketing. That’s all I can remember from my days of having to incorporate Super Bowl Sunday.
Do you really need to do this?
Does your business have to marry your product/service to Feb 11? I think it would be fun to use some of the current events or be a little kitschy, but you definitely do not need to use “Super Bowl” in the messaging.
Even if you owned a bowling alley or sold big bowls, I’m sure you’ve had years to hone in on the tongue-in-cheek. You could play Taylor Swift all Sunday during a bowling session.
You could sell red bowls for parties: “Whether your team wins or loses, you win with our big bowls.”
What other phrases have YOU noticed in lieu of “Super Bowl”? REPLY back and let me know. I can’t wait to hear them!!

A few days ago, my Dell monitor gave me the green screen of death. It’s still working on and off but I think it’s time to look for a new monitor. This monitor is on for about 10-12 hours a day, every day.
I’d like to hear from you. What are you using for an external monitor? Do you like your monitor? How much did it cost? Is there one I should be looking at?
Send me all the monitors! (Or links.) Thank you!
Have a terrific week.
